dynamite

biography of the band

This trio based out of Chapel Hill, NC specializes in their own brand of rock n' roll that blends blues, soul, punk, funk, garage rock, jazz, and other styles. Elements of Muddy Waters, Funkadelic, the Chambers Brothers, the Who, R.L. Burnside, Stax soul, Bad Brains, Little Richard, and Sly and the Family Stone echo throughout their original sound. The Dynamite Brothers started as a duo consisting of Scott Nurkin (Drums, Vocals) and Mitchell Rothrock (Guitar, Vocals) in the summer of 1998. The band played house parties, the occasional club gig, and eventually began to tour the South. The Brothers added Shane Hartman on bass in early 2002, and have been recording and touring as a trio ever since.

The Dynamite Brothers first full-length record is out. Clap Along With the Dynamite Brothers was co-produced and engineered by Neal Spaulding of the $2 Pistols at Neal’s R-15 studio in Chapel Hill. You can check out some of the songs if you click on the music link. The record includes guest appearances from Tim Smith (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Countdown Quartet, the Jumpstarts), Scott McCall ($2 Pistols, Kenny Roby), April Howell (Hobex), Zeb Holt (Keyboards), and Ned Brownlow (Percussion). The band is releasing the record on their own label, and it will be distributed by Redeye.

You can catch their song "I Can’t Win" on the Rock n’ Mud compilation. The song is also featured in David Gordan Green’s (George Washington) new film All the Real Girls, released nationwide in February of 2003 by Sony. Their song "Whatcha Gonna Do?" was included on the Patchwork compilation, which also features Superchunk, Seaweed, Transportation, the Scaries, and other Chapel Hill bands.
